The University of Portland (UP) seeks applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the nationally-ranked Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering with a scheduled appointment date of July 1, 2020.

Appointed by the University President, Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., Ph.D., and reporting to the Provost, Thomas G. Greene Ed.D., the Dean is responsible for the quality, conduct, administration, planning, and development of the School’s teaching programs, research activities, and industry partnerships. Other specific responsibilities include managing the budget, appointing faculty and staff, innovating in engineering education, maintaining a positive ethos in a mission-driven unit, and enhancing dynamic relationships within the University and community.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Responsibilities:

The Dean will take office at a pivotal moment in the School of Engineering's history. There has been a significant foundation laid that focuses on access, inclusion, and diversity, presenting an opportunity for the selected candidate to advance that exciting work. The School has engaged in a University-wide planning process to provide about 50,000 square feet for innovation, labs, and design to support the school and interdisciplinary programming. Significant gifts have already been raised to support these aspirations.

The selected candidate will also have a chance to collaborate with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Pamplin School of Business Deans to lead the recently reorganized and staffed Franz Center for Leadership, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, which provides an innovation minor under the supervision of the Shiley School. The School of Engineering has established progressive industry partnerships and relationships with significant foundations.

Requirements:

Education:

Required: Ph.D. in Engineering, or a related discipline.

Experience, Skills and Abilities:

Previous teaching and administrative experience in higher education, as well as a record of teaching and scholarship that warrants appointment to the faculty at senior rank.

An understanding of and support for the Catholic mission of the University and the School of Engineering.

An ambition to lead a school recognized for the premier quality of its graduates.

A record of commitment to high ethical standards, access, inclusion, and diversity.

The ability to establish the links between the University and public and private industry, foundations and community partners.
