General Summary:

The instructor of vocational nursing is responsible for classroom instruction, demonstration and supervision of nursing skills in the simulation laboratory, and teaching and supervising students during their clinical experiences in various hospitals and agencies. Particpates in student recruitment and selection process. Assists the director with program evaluation and revision. Maintains records for assigned courses. Advises, tutors, and counsels students.  

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Current license as a registered nurse or licensed vocational/practical nurse with authority to practice in Texas. 
2. Three years of varied nursing experience. 
3. Has academic preparation and clinical experience to teach curriculum assignments. 
4. Must be cleared on a criminal background check. 
5. Must be able to travel independently to and from multiple work sites. 
6. Must be proficient in the use of a computer, including the ability to use word processing, build simple data bases, make instructional aids, and utilize the Internet.  

Preferred Qualifications:


Specific Position Duties:

1. Implements the curriculum according to standards set forth by the Texas Board of Nursing, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Boad, Odessa College, and the program director. 
2. Assists with curriculum evaluation and revision to maintain currency with the nursing profession and health care industry. 
3. Assumes responsibility for the physical condition of assigned office space, skills lab, and classrooms. 
4. Assists with the procurement of instructional supplies. 
5. Evaluates student performance in the clinical setting based upon clinical learning outcomes and required competencies. 
6. Particpates in departmental meetings and attends meetings and activities on the main campus in Odessa as appropriate. 
7. Maintains a student-focused approach to instructional duties. 
8. Maintains professionalism with peers, staff, and members of the health care community. 
9. Must be able to communicate effectively.  

Work Hours:

Class and clinical schedules vary. Work Monday through Friday. This is a 12 month program. Holidays according to college schedule.
