Job Summary

Applications are invited for a full-time Post-Doctoral position at University of Colorado Boulder, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) and NOAA/Space Weather Prediction Center. The successful applicant will work on magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere coupling, with a particular focus on cross energy coupling in the inner magnetosphere and its interaction with the ionosphere and thermosphere. Proficiency in analyzing space- and ground- based observation data and performing computer model simulations is desirable. A PhD in a field associated with space physics is required by the start date of appointment.

At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Analyze and interpret data from space- and ground- based observations.

  • Perform computer model simulations.

  • Compare model simulations and observations.

  • Perform a number of numerical experiments.

  • Present findings at scientific conferences and write scientific articles.

Funding for this position will be for one year, with the possibility of extension for a second year depending on available funding.

What We Require

  • PhD in Physics (or a related field) with research background applicable to space physics.

  • A working knowledge of data visualization and analysis packages in Python, IDL, Matlab, or equivalent.

What You Will Need

  • A working knowledge of computer programming with Fortran, C++, or equivalent.

  • Good communication skills to effectively interact with internal and external collaborators.
