A postdoctoral position is available for a highly motivated individual to study the resolution of inflammation in heart failure pathology after heart attack in the lab of Dr. Ganesh Halade in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Disease. Studies will focus on neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and fibroblasts to interrogate cell-signaling mechanisms in primary cells using molecular biology. Mechanistic studies will be coupled with tests of physiological measurements after surgically induced myocardial infarction in a survival mouse model. Current translational research experiments will be assayed by flow cytometry, gene array, histology, and immunohistochemistry. A fundamental training in molecular biology is required, and any training in animal surgery, echocardiography and histology will be beneficial. The successful candidate will employ in-vitro and in-vivo models to examine the roles of lipid mediators in post-myocardial infarction and cardiac remodeling. Responsibilities will include maintenance of complete laboratory records, lab animal experiments, execution of experimental procedures, preparation of manuscripts, and presentations at internal and national meetings as required.
Qualification: The applicant must have a Ph.D. in biomedical science or other related disciplines, with a strong background/expertise in one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, cell biology, and/or cardiac physiology. Expertise in cell culture, handling of laboratory animals, and minor animal surgery is highly desirable. Expertise with basic techniques utilizing DNA, RNA, protein, and tissue culture is required. Applicant needs to demonstrate independence and the ability to communicate.
If interested, please send a CV, names of three references, and a description of research interests and career goals (1 page) to Keri Dickens at email@example.com.
Postdoc Awards and Benefits
Competitive postdoc awards are available including internships, grant incentives, funds to enhance education and collaboration outside UAB, and teaching opportunities at local universities. There is also a Postdoc Research Day with monetary awards. The OPE strongly encourages UAB research mentors to follow the National Research Service Award stipend level guidelines, and postdoctoral scholars qualify for health, life, and other insurances. They also have the right to participate in the university’s 403(b) program and enjoy vacation, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, and other benefits.
