Mentor: Dr. Frank Wolschendorf, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases, University of Alabama at Birmingham, BBRB512, 845 19th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35294.  Telephone: (205) 975-2760; Email: fwolsche@uab.edu

The Wolschendorf laboratory at UAB is pleased to offer a NIH funded Postdoc position in the fields of antimicrobial drug discovery and development. Our lab is spearheading a novel approach in antimicrobial drug-discovery by exploiting metal ion related synergies between bacterial inhibitors and the host’s innate immune system. The project is staged in a multidisciplinary research environment allowing us to utilize a combination of approaches in molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and chem/bio-informatics. Our research goals are to identify and characterize novel scaffolds, elucidate their metal-related mode of antimicrobial action, and demonstrate efficacy in appropriate cell-culture based in vitro infection models. Our prime target organisms are Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Expertise in working with either of these organisms and knowledge of their unique physiology will be viewed positively during the application process. The applicant is expected to have excellent writing and communication skills to accommodate the highly collaborative nature of this project, and will be given the opportunity to work in a team and gradually assume leadership responsibilities. The position is available immediately and applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. We offer a competitive salary based on qualification and experience.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Microbiology or related field.

Application: Applications should be submitted online through UAB’s Postdoc application portal at https://www.uab.edu/postdocs/contact-the-postdoc-office/apply-for-a-uab-postdoc-position. Please paste “Dr. Wolschendorf” or the application reference code in the field ‘position of interest’.
